YEREVAN, February 27, 2007 (RFE/RL) – A man has died in hospital after suffering third-degree burns today when he immolated himself in front of the Armenian government building in Yerevan, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reported.Djivan Hakopian made antigovernment statements before dousing his body in gasoline and lighting himself on fire on Yerevan’s Square of the Republic today. The sitting of the People’s Party Board scheduled on February 26 was canceled because of some technical problems. To note, the sitting will affirm the party’s decision to run for the elections alone. The issue of proportional system is still under consideration.
«Our stance is the following; we have always said that we are ready to run for the elections alone. On the other hand, we are convinced that all the oppositional parties must cooparate and support each other to prevent election frauds before, during and after the elections», Ruzan Khachatryan, member of the party’s board informed A1+. February 26, 2007 (RFE/RL) — The Armenian parliament today overwhelmingly approved the third and final reading of a bill allowing Armenia’s large diaspora to hold dual citizenship, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reported.Under the draft law, dual citizenship holders will be able to vote in Armenian elections provided they are registered in the country as residents. An Armenian church in Glendale is part of an effort to allow more refugees persecuted in part for their faith into the U.S.
They were dressed as police officers, but Iraqi physician Nina Grigor knew something was dreadfully wrong when they threw her into a car, blindfolded her, tied her wrists — and ripped the cross from her neck.
For five days last March, the Iraqi Armenian Christian was held somewhere in Baghdad. When she was finally freed after her family paid $100,000 in ransom, she was immediately spirited away to Armenia for safety and then, in July, to Glendale. Read the rest of this entry »

Azeri-Americans joint Turkey’s efforts in opposing the adoption of the Armenian Genocide resolution by the U.S. Congress. Armenia has “very good relations with Russia, which include a lot of spheres, Armenian President Robert Kocharian stated in the interview to “France 24” TV company. “We do not have problems with Russia. On February 20, at the UK House of Commons, Armenia’s Ambassador to Great Britain Vahe Gabrielyan had a meeting with members of the two chambers of the UK parliament and members of Armenian communities in Britain.

The prosecutor’s office for Istanbul’s Sisli district has launched an investigation into Sisli Mayor Mustafa Sarigül and the committee that organized the funeral for journalist Hrant Dink, the slain editor of the Turkish-Armenian weekly Agos, for the slogans “We are all Armenians”, “We are all Hrant Dink”, according to a report from Milliyet daily. Turkish historians are going to learn Armenian to study the documents stored in the archives of foreign countries, head of History department of Turkey informed APA agency.
He noted that while studying the documents of foreign archives, the Turkish historians are denied access to Armenian documents. There is only one scientist in Turkey knowing Armenian. His name is Birsan Gharajan and he is a professor of Istanbul University. Read the rest of this entry »
